Police arrest 8 Chinese, 2 Ghanaians in ECG cable theft operation

Ten people have been arrested by the Ghana Police Service for their alleged involvement in stealing and processing electricity cables belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Among those arrested are eight Chinese nationals who hold managerial positions at Sentuo Company and two Ghanaians. Police believe the group may be part of a network involved in stealing ECG cables and preparing the metal for export.

The suspects were arrested during a police operation at the Kpone Industrial Area in Tema on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at around 3:30 p.m.

The operation was carried out by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) together with officials from the Ministry of Energy after they received intelligence about stolen ECG cables being processed at the location.

Speaking to journalists in Accra on Monday, March 9, 2026, the Director-General of the CID, Lydia Yaako Donkor, said officers raided the Sentuo Company premises near Tema after acting on the tip-off.

When the team arrived, they found about 70 workers at the facility. According to police, the workers were cutting ECG service cables into smaller pieces and removing the metal wires from the plastic covering.

Investigators say the exposed metal wires were then being pressed into metal blocks, which they suspect were being prepared for export.

During the operation, police discovered more than 100 drums filled with service cables believed to belong to the Electricity Company of Ghana.

Authorities say the large quantity of cables found suggests that the operation may have been going on for some time and was well organised.

The two Ghanaians arrested have been identified as Samuel Ekpe and Priscilla Padu. The other suspects, believed to be Chinese nationals working in managerial roles at the company, are Yuxiaoting, He Jing, Xu Changjiu, Li Lei, Chen Jin, Zheng Ma, Wang Jian and Bin Bin.

Police say a 24-hour security guard has been placed at the facility to make sure no materials are removed while investigations continue.

The Ghana Police Service says the operation is an important step in the fight against the theft of key national infrastructure.

According to the police, the stealing and illegal export of ECG cables has caused serious problems for electricity supply in many communities, businesses and public institutions across the country.

Authorities have also assured the public that they will continue working with other state agencies to protect national assets and ensure that those involved in such activities are brought to justice.
