Police in the New Juaben South Municipality have arrested 13 suspected commercial sex workers and two alleged accomplices in a targeted operation aimed at clamping down on prostitution and human trafficking.
The suspects, all believed to be of Nigerian descent, are between the ages of 15 and 31.
According to the Municipal Police Command, the two accomplices include landlords and their partners who are suspected of providing premises and support for prostitution related activities within the municipality.
Police say the arrests form part of broader efforts to protect vulnerable persons, particularly minors, and to enforce provisions of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 Act 29, which criminalises prostitution, human trafficking and the operation of brothels.
Addressing the media, the Municipal Crime Officer, ASP Augustine Kusi Asante, warned property owners against allowing their houses to be used for illegal activities.
The New Juaben South Municipal Police Commander, Superintendent Ransford Nsiah, disclosed that all suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations.
He noted that the minor involved has been separated from the group for protection, with arrangements underway in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare.
The arrests followed a complaint made on Sunday, February 8, 2025, by one of the suspects, Stella Godwill, who reported an alleged assault and trafficking case.
Investigations revealed she was expected to meet a daily target of GH¢400, allegedly demanded by a so-called queenmother, leading to a confrontation when she failed to do so.
Further investigations uncovered another suspected brothel in Dabiasem, where the remaining suspects were arrested.
Condoms were found in their possession. Police say the suspects will be arraigned before court after investigations are completed.
