The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with some members of the Awutu Bereku community, arrested four persons for allegedly stealing some building materials procured for the construction of Agenda 111 Hospital at Awutu Bereku in the Central Region.
This increases the number of suspects arrested in connection with the post-election disturbances to 110.
The latest arrests were made yesterday, December 10, 2024, following the interception of a Man Diesel truck, with registration number GT 8715-Z, driven by one of the suspects identified as Kwabena Ayamba, loaded with assorted building materials.
Police investigations revealed that the suspects were allegedly contracted by the project contractor to transport the items from the Agenda 111 project site to Tema.
The suspects are currently in custody, assisting with investigations. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to get the said contractor arrested to face justice.
All suspects are in custody assisting the police in investigations, and they will be made to face justice, the police revealed.
The latest incident adds to pockets of violence, attacks, and assaults recorded across the country.
Meanwhile, President-elect John Dramani Mahama has called on President Nana Akufo-Addo and the security services to take swift and decisive actions to address the ongoing acts of lawlessness reported nationwide.
Addressing the nation on Tuesday, December 10, Mr. Mahama condemned the attacks and urged the perpetrators to refrain from such criminal activities.
“I received reports of attacks on state offices and installations. While it’s unclear who is behind these attacks, I condemn them in no uncertain terms. These acts must cease immediately.”
He emphasised the importance of channelling frustration and anger into positive efforts to rebuild the nation.
“As I said during my post-declaration speech, I urge the youth not to vent their frustration in criminal enterprise. Instead, they must channel their anger and frustration into the positive enterprise of resetting and rebuilding our beloved nation,” Mr. Mahama stated.
Mr Mahama called on all citizens to remain calm and avoid actions that could harm institutions and democracy.
“We have fought hard for change, and now is the time to demonstrate our commitment to rebuilding the Ghana we want through unity and understanding.”
He noted that “transitions create an impression of vacuum, and some people take the law into their own hands. However, since the current government is still in charge of this country, I urge them to get the security officers to act decisively on the current state of affairs.”
