89 arrested as police announce measures to clampdown post-election violence
The Ghana Police Service has implemented additional security measures nationwide following the elections on December 7.
In a statement dated December 9, 2024, the law enforcement agency said these measures are intended to maintain peace, security and law and order.
The measures include enhanced visibility through joint patrols with other security agencies and intelligence-led operations in selected areas to arrest troublemakers.
A special investigation team has also been set up to review all videos related to the elections to help the police identify the perpetrators of various offences.
This comes after reported incidents of vandalism, looting, and destruction of properties in some places across the nation.
The police said 89 suspects have so far been arrested for various offences during the electoral period.

“40 of them are directly connected to the acts of vandalism, looting, and the destruction of properties. All the suspects will be put before the court to face justice,” the statement read.
The police also cautioned the public to desist from violence “since the perpetrators will be arrested and taken through the due process of the law.”.
It further expressed gratitude to all Ghanaians for their support throughout the electoral process while urging them to remain calm.
