PNC and LPG withdraw from Tamale Central by-election
The People’s National Convention (PNC) and the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) have officially withdrawn from the Tamale Central by-election scheduled for September 30, 2025.
This comes after the main opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), bowed out of the contest in honour of the late Member of Parliament, Alhaji Hon. Dr. Murtala Mohammed.
This leaves Professor Seidu Mahama Alidu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the sole contestant in the race.
Prof. Alidu secured a resounding victory in the NDC primary held over the weekend, where 12 candidates sought to represent the party in the upcoming by-election.
He received 840 votes out of 1,500 valid ballots cast, solidifying his position as the leading candidate for the parliamentary seat in the by-election scheduled for September 30, 2025.
A source from the Electoral Commission (EC) confirmed that the PNC and LPG candidates, who had already submitted their nominations on September 10, 2025, have officially withdrawn from the race by notifying the EC through their general secretaries.
The by-election follows the tragic passing of the region’s MP, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, who lost his life in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, alongside seven others.
The Tamale Central constituency has been a stronghold for the NDC, and Prof. Alidu’s success in the primary virtually ensures his entry into Parliament, as the upcoming by-election is largely seen as a formality.
