Plot to remove CJ part of a scheme to remove EC Chairperson – Ahiagbah

The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, is asserting that recent petitions aimed at removing Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo are part of a broader strategy to appoint a nominee more related to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

This statement comes in the wake of complaints submitted to President John Dramani Mahama, where individuals have called for the Chief Justice’s ousting over alleged misconduct.

In his response, President Mahama referred these petitions to the Council of State for guidance and has given Chief Justice Torkornoo a period of 10 days to present her defense.

Commenting on this matter via the social media platform X, Ahiagbah characterised the actions as a tactical effort to undermine the independence of the judiciary and to facilitate the removal of crucial electoral officials, including the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa.

He argues that this strategy poses a significant threat to democratic governance and institutional integrity, urging the citizens of Ghana to stand against such moves.

He made this assertion on his Twitter page, now known as X.

“A grand scheme is underway to remove the Chief Justice and replace her with a preferred NDC-Mahama Chief Justice, who will implement the agenda of ousting the electoral commissioners (Jean Mensa and others).

“This is a premeditated attack on institutional independence and, ultimately, on our democracy.

“We must find the courage as citizens, regardless of where we belong, to speak out unequivocally against the politics of the John Mahama Administration.

“Silence would be a disservice to our posterity….”.
