Mr Samuel Atta Akyea, the chairman of the Parliamentary committee probing the alleged plot to oust the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, has revealed that the committee has obtained a new tape, which is supposed to be a comprehensive recording of the people involved.
The conversation purportedly ensued between former Director of Operations for the Ghana Police Service, COP George Alex Mensah, Superintendent George Asare and former Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bugri Naabu.
Mr Atta Akyea made this revelation in an interview with the media after the committee’s hearing on Monday, September 4.
“Now we have had the benefit of the tape on the assumption that it is authentic. The members of the committee will have to internalize that tape and also transcribe and look at it, and that will give us the ideas as to what to do,” he said.
According to him, the committee will examine the supposed new tape.
Mr. Atta Akyea said that after reviewing the tape, the committee would decide whether to invite witnesses to bring attorneys for cross-examination and further interrogation.
He said reviewing the tape would require an in-camera hearing to prevent sensitive information from becoming public due to security implications.
He, however, withheld the information about the channels used to secure the tape.
“We might not divulge our sources because then you block people from giving us information, but then we have the tape, which is supposed to be the comprehensive tape.
“If you told the world that it was Kofi Mensah who brought me the tape, we might not get the next or final tape or any information,” he stated.
This comes after former Director General of Operations for the Ghana Police Service, COP George Alex Mensah, and Superintendent George Asare doubted the authenticity of the leaked tape in the public domain. However, they admitted to portions of the recordings.
