The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has successfully extinguished the massive fire at Zongo Lane, Accra, after a week-long effort.

The fire, which began on 1 September 2024, engulfed shops and warehouses filled with home appliances, mattresses, plastics and leather materials, making it difficult to control.

In a statement on Facebook, the GNFS said despite numerous challenges, including locked shops and warehouses, acrid smoke, intense heat, and collapsing structures, firefighters confined the blaze and prevented it from further spread.

“Though eight shops, four warehouses, and 12 residential rooms were destroyed, three adjoining buildings and warehouses with their contents were salvaged by the adept firefighters.

“Thankfully, no injuries or fatalities occurred. The area has been secured, and building experts will assess the damage and advice on needed and further action,” the statement added.

As a precaution, the GNFS said two fire engines remain on standby to address any potential reignition.

Meanwhile, investigations into the fire’s cause are ongoing, and the GNFS urges the public to prioritize safety to prevent similar incidents.
