Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong, says the prices of kenkey have significantly decreased due to the Planting for Food and Jobs Programme.
The Planting for Food and Jobs(PFJ) programme is an initiative implemented under President Akufo Addo’s administration to promote food security and immediate availability of selected food crops on the market and to provide jobs for citizens, among other things.
Dr. Acheampong in an interview claimed that PFJ has made maize more available on the market which has led to a reduction of Kenkey prices in the country.
According to the Member of Parliament for Abetifi, there are some areas where people can buy Kenkey as low as GH₵2 and GH₵5.
He also revealed that there are plans to increase rice production through partnerships with companies like Yara, which will lead to a surplus of rice in various regions.
Dr. Acheampong also emphasized that his administration has been successful in reducing food inflation across the country.
“There is a lot of maize out there too and if you look at the price of maize on the market, it tells you that there is a lot of it out there and that is why the price of Kenkey is going down. The average is about 2 cedis and 3 cedis. I can get you kenkey for 2 cedis, I can get you kenkey for 4 cedis, I can get you kenkey for 5 cedis” he noted in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Citi News.
Meanwhile, Dr. Acheampong has called on all farmers to take advantage of the PFJ and encouraged them to participate in the registration of the Phase II process to help boost food production in the country and improve agriculture.
The Agric Ministry on Tuesday launched a nationwide registration of farmers as part of the second phase of the Planting for Food and Jobs Programme (PFJ Phase 2) in all 261 districts across the country.
The registration exercise requires interested farmers and institutions or companies to visit their district agricultural directorate where extension officers will assist them by capturing their data with tablets supplied by the government.
