Perhaps COP Mensah Wanted To Say I’m The Best – Dampare Rejects ‘Worst IGP’ Tag
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr George Akuffo Dampare has refuted claims by the former Director-General of Operations for the Ghana Police Service, COP George Alex Mensah, that he is the worst IGP in Ghana’s history.
COP Mensah made this comment on September 1, when he appeared before a parliament’s ad-hoc committee tasked to investigate a leaked tape which captured himself, Emmanuel Eric Gyebi and George Lysander Asare, both Superintendents and former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu, plotting to remove the current IGP before the 2024 general elections.
According to COP Mensah, he has told the IGP in his face on “several occasions” that, indeed, his “administration is the worst ever in Ghana’s history”.
“Honourable member and honourable chair… what I said yesterday if you give me the opportunity today, I will say it again. For me, for the 31 years I have been in the service, he is the worst IGP ever,” he said.
Another common allegation made by Supt. Emmanuel Eric Gyebi and George Lysander Asare are that Dampare’s administration is based on autocracy, which implies that his administration is not the best.
However, the Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, appearing before the parliament’s ad-hoc committee to address the allegations made by the persons in the leaked tape on September 12, noted that his administration is one of the best in Ghana’s history and probably COP Alex Mensah wanted to say the opposite.
“Perhaps my brother wanted to say I’m the best IGP but missed it. The records are there for everyone to see. It is not true my administration is the worst. He missed it. It can never be true that my administration is the worst,” he said.
“It’s unfounded, and it is baseless. I think the best the person could have done if he had nothing to say is to keep quiet,”
Dr Dampare also stated that his administration operates on teamwork and does not visualize the police institution as a centred institution with autocratic rules.
