Pensioner Bondholders To Resume Picketing On June 1

The Pensioner Bondholders, a group representing pensioners who hold government bonds, have announced their intention to resume picketing on Thursday, June 1.

This is due to the government’s failure to fulfill its commitment to pay outstanding coupons.

Earlier this month, the Pensioner Bondholders Forum suspended its picketing activities after reaching an agreement with the Ministry of Finance regarding their coupons.

However, the group alleges that the government has not honored its obligations.

Convener of the forum, Dr. Adu A. Antwi, expressed disappointment in a statement, saying, “As of 29th of May 2023, there remain four outstanding coupons and four outstanding principals to be paid by the Ministry. The first principal has been outstanding for 98 days, the second for 84 days, the third for 42 days and the fourth due today.

“Naturally, we have to and had indicated to the Ministry we shall demand interest on the delayed principals as the Government has deprived investors involved of their capital for re-investment to earn returns.”

In view of the above, the Pensioner Bondholders Forum has notified the police that they will resume picketing on June 1, 2023.

Their plan is to picket on Thursdays and Fridays of each week until the Ministry fulfills its payment obligations, ensuring that coupons and principals are paid on time without any further delays.

The group expressed frustration at the government’s lack of response and refusal to engage with them, despite their numerous letters to the Ministry.

The Ministry of Finance is yet to provide an official response to the Pensioner Bondholders Forum’s recent claims.
