The National Peace Council has condemned the recent wave of violence reported in Senior High Schools (SHSs) across the country, warning that the disturbing trend threatens student safety and the credibility of Ghana’s education system.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, the Council said it had recorded at least six cases of student-related violence within a week.

Among them was an incident involving a student of Obrachire Senior High School in the Central Region who was hospitalised after an attack during a district athletics competition.

The Council also cited the alleged gang rape of a female student of Osino Presbyterian SHS and the stabbing of a final year student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School during the Supper Zonal sports festival in Koforidua.

In Accra, teachers of West Africa SHS were reportedly assaulted by students of Frafraha Community SHS.

Another case involved the assault of a final year student of Adisadel College by six students of Aggrey Memorial SHS during an inter-schools sports event in Cape Coast.

While the Ghana Education Service (GES) has pledged disciplinary action, the Council backed a directive from the Ministry of Education for swift investigations.

“Beyond the efforts of the Ghana Police Service in arresting most of the culprits, the NPC calls for improved security in our schools and during sporting events. The Council also calls for strengthened counselling services to address underlying issues of indiscipline in our schools,” the statement said.

The Council also appealed to parents, teachers and education authorities to work together to restore discipline and ensure schools remain safe spaces for learning.
