Some aggrieved workers of the Produce Buying Company of Ghana (PBC) on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, staged a massive protest over unpaid salaries.
The workers, clad in red attires and holding placards, marched from Abeka Junction to the company’s headquarters in Dzorwulu over their 12-month salary arrears.
Expressing their dissatisfaction with management, the group demanded better working conditions and immediate payment of their salaries.
The Vice Chairman of the PBC Workers Union, Seth Adusei, stressed that some members are battling severe health conditions and have been unable to receive the needed medical attention due to the salary arrears.
He added that some members have been evicted from their homes for failing to meet rent obligations.
This is not the first time PBC workers are protesting over salary concerns and mismanagement.
A similar demonstration was held by PBC staff in the Ashanti region on May 29, 2024.
The workers called on state agencies to investigate the company’s financial management.
They urged the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to examine the status of the company’s sample residue account.
At the time, the company was attempting to sell off some of its properties when the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) and five other banks secured a court order to prevent the sale or transfer of assets.
Some placards had inscriptions such as ‘PBC can do better with right management’, ‘PBC cocoa farmers vote matters’, ‘Mr President, probe PBC management for mismanagement’ and ‘PBC workers and dependents lives matter’.
