Pay debts or lose permits – GRA warns oil companies

Anthony Sarpong, Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), has disclosed that the authority is intensifying efforts to recover millions of dollars owed by oil and media companies to the state.

Answering questions before the Public Accounts Committee on Monday, January 12, he revealed that Media Development Limited owes the GRA $313,040, while ECO Atlantic has an outstanding debt of $47,200.

He explained that for companies not operating within the country, the GRA has notified the Petroleum Commission to use their channels to remind the firms of their obligations and ensure debt collection whenever they engage in local activities.

“To recover these funds, we are also leveraging multilateral arrangements with other countries through our Exchange of Information agreements. We have submitted the debts to the authorities in the countries where these entities are registered, enabling their support in recovering what is owed,” he added.

Mr Sarpong added that the GRA has strengthened collaboration with the Petroleum Commission and Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, emphasising that entities failing to meet their obligations will not receive the necessary permits until they settle their debts.
