Paul Afoko announces comeback to contest NPP National Chairmanship

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Afoko, has officially announced his intention to run for the party’s National Chairmanship position in the forthcoming national officers’ election.

In a statement titled “Declaration of Intention to Contest the National Chairmanship Position of the New Patriotic Party,” Mr. Afoko indicated that his decision is the result of thorough reflection and encouragement from party members and stakeholders advocating for renewed leadership within the NPP.

“After extensive reflection and encouragement from many well-meaning members, supporters, and stakeholders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), I am honoured to formally announce my intention to contest for the position of National Chairman in the upcoming election of national officers,” he stated.

He elaborated that his choice was driven by a commitment to restore the NPP to its foundational values and democratic principles.

“This decision has not been taken lightly. It comes after careful consideration and in response to the consistent calls for renewed leadership rooted in the founding values and democratic ideals of our Party,” he said.

Mr. Afoko reiterated his allegiance to the NPP despite previous challenges and emphasised that his focus is on rebuilding and fortifying the party.

“While the journey has not been without its trials, I have always chosen to prioritise the unity and progress of the NPP above all else. My focus now, as it has always been, is on the future — one where our Party stands re-energised, inclusive, and better positioned to deliver on its promise to the Ghanaian people.”

He also mentioned that in the upcoming weeks, he will connect with party members and the media to present his vision and leadership strategies.

He stated that in the upcoming weeks, he intends to connect with party loyalists and the media to present his vision and leadership strategies.

“In the coming weeks, I will engage more broadly with Party faithful and the media to share my vision, ideas, and plans to lead the NPP with integrity, transparency, and a renewed sense of purpose. Let us look ahead together.”

Paul Afoko was suspended in 2015 from his position as the NPP’s National Chairman following a resolution made by the party’s National Executive Committee during an emergency meeting convened at the party headquarters in Accra.

The suspension was a result of a recommendation from the NPP’s Disciplinary Committee after the Council of Elders submitted a seven-page petition requesting disciplinary measures against him.

Mr. Afoko faced allegations from certain party members of undermining the then-flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo’s prospects in the lead-up to the 2016 general elections.

He was reportedly unable to respond to several invitations from the Disciplinary Committee before the recommendation for his suspension was issued.
