Patrick Boamah floors Baba Sadiq in Okaikwei Central after final collation

Patrick Boamah, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central and candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been declared the winner of the December 7, 2024, parliamentary election following the collation of outstanding polling station results.

The announcement was made on Sunday, January 5, 2025, after the Electoral Commission (EC) concluded the collation process, which had been delayed due to disputes over results from several polling stations.

Background to the Controversy

The Okaikwei Central constituency had been at the center of a heated political and legal battle after the December elections.

Initial results had placed Patrick Boamah and his closest rival, Emmanuel Quaye of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), in a tight race.

However, the Electoral Commission was unable to declare a winner due to discrepancies in results from a few polling stations.

Supporters from both political camps had expressed frustration over the delays, with tensions escalating as each side claimed victory.

The issue was eventually taken to court, where a judge ordered the EC to collate the remaining results and declare the final winner.

Collation and Declaration of Results

After completing the collation of all 152 polling stations, the EC announced the final results:

  • Patrick Boamah (NPP): 25,872 votes
  • Emmanuel Quaye (NDC): 25,651 votes
  • Independent Candidate: 498 votes

The total valid votes cast were 52,021, with 230 rejected ballots, making a total of 52,251 votes cast.

Francis Asare, the EC’s Returning Officer for the constituency, declared, “Based on the total valid votes cast, I hereby declare Patrick Boamah of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the Member of Parliament-elect for Okaikwei Central.”

Significance of the Victory

This victory marks Patrick Boamah’s third consecutive term as MP for Okaikwei Central, solidifying his position as a key figure in the constituency.

Speaking after the declaration, Boamah expressed gratitude to his constituents and pledged to continue working towards their development.

“This victory belongs to the people of Okaikwei Central,” Boamah said. “I am humbled by your trust and promise to deliver on my mandate to ensure progress and prosperity for all.”

Implications for the Constituency

The NPP’s victory in Okaikwei Central is seen as a significant boost for the party, particularly in the Greater Accra Region, where several constituencies have been keenly contested.

Analysts believe the outcome reflects the strong personal appeal of Patrick Boamah and his track record of delivering on key projects in the area.

With the legal and electoral disputes now resolved, residents of Okaikwei Central can look forward to stable representation in Parliament and a focus on development initiatives.
