Party agents have the right to request double recount of votes – EC Boss
Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs Jean Mensa, has affirmed that party agents now hold the right to request a double recount of votes in the December 7 elections.
According to her, this will help maintain transparency in the presidential and parliamentary elections.
Appearing before Parliament on Friday, July 19, the EC boss underscored the commission’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and transparent elections, in response to inquiries from legislators.
Responding to an MP’s query on vote recount at the polling stations, Mrs Mensa hinted at the possibility when requested.
“Yes! A party or candidate’s agent can call for a recount of the votes only two times at the polling station if he/she is dissatisfied with the counting of the ballots.
“If he/she still insists there is a problem with the process after the second counting, the next place to resolve the issue will be the Constituency Collation Centre,” she explained.
The EC boss emphasized that comprehensive measures are being implemented to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
Mrs. Mensa’s parliamentary appearance coincides with increased scrutiny and public engagement in the electoral process, as stakeholders emphasize accountability and transparency in the upcoming elections.
With the 2024 elections being pivotal for Ghana’s continued peace and stability, election observers stress the importance of meticulous preparation to minimize potential disruptions.
