Parliamentary Proceedings Adjourned As Quorum Concerns Arise Amid Assin North By-Election

Parliament has been compelled to adjourn proceedings to Thursday, June 29, following the absence of Members of Parliament.

The decision to postpone the session was driven by concerns over the quorum, as highlighted by the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.

Most of the legislators are believed to be in the Assin North constituency supporting their respective candidates in the ongoing by-election.

Only 14 MPs were present in the house, with three from the Minority side and 11 from the Majority side.

Recognizing the low turnout, Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu proposed the adjournment, and his suggestion was seconded by James Agalga, the acting leader of the Minority Caucus.

“There is a very important activity that is taking place outside of Parliament, and many of our colleagues are taking part in that exercise. It is significant to observe in today’s sitting that the Majority outnumbers the Minority, and so I recommend we deal with just the presentation of papers. When we are done, I believe we should take an adjournment,” he said.

However, Mr. Agalga contested the notion that the Majority significantly outnumbered the Minority.

Meanwhile, voting is underway to elect a new Member of Parliament for Assin North Constituency.

A total of 41,000 voters are expected to vote in 99 polling stations within the constituency.
