Barely 24 hours after his vetting by the Appointment Committee, Parliament has approved the nomination of Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah as Chief Justice of Ghana.
The approval by the legislators comes after the Deputy Speaker of the House, Mr. Joseph Osei Owusu, read the report of the Appointment Committee of Parliament.
Delivering the report of the Vetting Committee, Mr. Osei Owusu, who is also the MP for Bekwai in the Ashanti region, said “The committee observed that given his high standard of competence and integrity, forthrightness, astuteness and in-depth appreciation of the law that he exhibited before the committee and independence of thought, the nominee qualifies to serve as the Chief Justice of the Republic.
“His demeanour and composure during the stretch of his vetting portray him as a calm and tolerant person. A person inclined to administer justice fairly and fittingly to the people of the land,” he added.
Justice Anin Yeboah is set to replace the retired Justice Sophia Abena Boafoa Akuffo who exits almost two years after being in office.
His vetting was not without controversy as the Minority had earlier threatened to boycott the process, accusing the Chairman of the Appointment’s Committee, Joseph Osei-Owusu, of attempting to rush the exercise.
Chief Justice Anin-Yeboah was asked for his personal views on matters regarding court proceedings and rulings, dress code of lawyers, achievements, and aspirations among others.
His approval by Parliament pending a swearing-in ceremony.
This makes him the first male Chief Justice Ghana has had in 12 years.
He succeeds, Justice Sophia Akuffo who occupied the position from 2017 to 2019 and Justice Georgina Theodora Wood who held the position from 2007-2017.
