Paris 2024: Team Ghana ‘surprised’ at claims of demanding bonuses

Ghana’s athletes have been left ‘surprised’ at claims of their demand for bonuses at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Graphic Sports had earlier reported that the athletes, who currently based in Strasbourg, need their bonuses settled to ‘boost their morale’ for the upcoming global competition.

In an official response to JoySports, Media Attache to Team Ghana, Benjamin Willie Graham dismissed the report.

“The team in Strasbourg has not made any demands for any bonus or allowance through to the Captain, or the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, there has never been any communication to that effect,” he said.

However, he admitted there are outstanding allowances owed the athletes for previous competitions.

“The story that came out was actually referring to bonuses or allowances from the 2023 African Games, the Douala competition [African Athletics Championships] and Bahabas [World Athletics Relays]. It has nothing to do with the Paris Olympic Games.

“So when that report came, it kind of surprised a lot of people, especially the athletes.”

Ghana’s 21-man delegation includes eight athletes which features the 4x100m relay team in track and field, Joselle Mensah and Harry Stacey in Swimming, and Rose Yeboah in the high jump event.

The global tournament runs from July 6 to August 11.
