Mobile Money Limited says it is intensifying efforts to combat mobile money fraud, blocking more than 400,000 scam text messages every day in a bid to protect customers.
Speaking in an interview on Friday, May 2, the company’s Chief Risk and Compliance Officer, Godwin Tamakloe, revealed that advanced security filters are now in place to detect and block suspicious SMS messages before they reach users.
“With text messages, we’ve implemented a system that uses preset rules to block scam SMS before they get to customers, we’re able to block over 400,000 scam messages a day, messages designed to trick users into calling fraudsters,” Tamakloe said.
He explained that most attacks come via SMS, links, or phone calls, but the company’s system is especially effective at intercepting malicious texts by flagging specific keywords and patterns.
Mr Tamakloe also addressed growing public concerns about potential insider involvement in mobile money fraud.
He dismissed these claims, stressing that Mobile Money staff do not have access to customers’ PINs or private account details, making internal fraud highly unlikely.
In response to the rising number of fraud victims sharing their experiences online, Tamakloe encouraged greater transparency from affected users.
He urged victims to provide honest and detailed accounts of how they were scammed to help track fraud networks and prevent future attacks.
As mobile money fraud becomes increasingly sophisticated, Mr Tamakloe emphasised the importance of combining robust security systems with customer vigilance and open reporting to stay ahead of fraudsters.
