Over 30 graves looted at Takoradi cemetery
Grave looters are vandalizing multiple graves at a Takoradi cemetery, causing fear and concern among residents.
Numerous graves have reportedly been looted in the cemetery which shares a wall with the the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) Depot along the Takoradi – Kwesimintsim highway.
Some of the caskets have been stolen, leaving the corpses exposed and some body parts reportedly missing.
This has prompted some residents whose relatives were laid to rest at the cemetery to rush to the scene to check on them after hearing of the development.
Some residents also blamed the authorities for neglecting the cemetery after relatives paid to secure a burial site for their deceased.
Speaking to the media, Abdul Karim Hudu, the Environmental Analyst at the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA), said a visit to the cemetery revealed over 30 graves have been vandalized.
He said the cemetery was closed to the public in 2018 after the allocated land became full.
He said STMA is taking steps to immediately bring the worrying situation to an end.
“The place is bushy, so, we will weed and deploy security to monitor the area and deter miscreants. Anyone caught engaging in such activities will face the full force of the law,” he warned.
Mr Hudu stated that the assembly will begin collecting maintenance fees from relatives to secure the area.
