Court patrons went berserk when a police officer, alleged to have shot his girlfriend in Kumasi, pleaded not guilty to the murder charge.

The suspect, Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, who stands accused of fatally shooting 26-year-old Victoria Dapaa, also known as Maa Adwoa, insisted that he did not commit the crime.

The courtroom erupted in emotional turmoil as the plea was made, with family members and onlookers expressing shock and outrage.

The facts presented before the court revealed a stark contrast to the officer’s claim of innocence. The prosecution said that he fired five shots at close range, resulting in the tragic death of the mother of one.

Court documents also suggest the accused used a service pistol to commit the crime.

The grieving family expressed their deep anguish and vehemently rebuked the accused officer after court proceedings.

One family member said, “You think you can just shoot anybody and go scot-free? We are angry. The deceased cannot rest until justice has been served. You can’t say you’re innocent. We won’t agree”.

This is the third time the police officer is appearing before the Asokore Mampong District Court.

The prosecution told the court they are ready for trial.

The case has been adjourned to July 13, 2023.
