‘Our Reward Is Not In Heaven’ – Doctors Demand Retirement On Full Salary
The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) believes doctors deserve to retire on their full salary after dedicating their lives to serving others.
According to the president of GMA, Dr. Frank Serebour, their pensions must be secure after all their sacrifices.
“Retirement on a full salary is not an unreasonable demand. Our reward is not in heaven but here on planet earth. What we are asking for is not an impossibility,” he said at the 65th General Meeting of the association on Monday, November 13, 2023.
Dr Serebour requested adequate logistics and a supportive environment to maintain their physical and mental well-being to care for the population effectively.
“We should not be made to pay the ultimate price of losing our lives and homes in our quest to care for the vulnerable. Someone must care for the health worker,” he insisted.
He also called on the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to urgently implement any agreed-upon terms with the GMA, as delays will not be tolerated.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Finance Minister, Abena Osei Asare, assured the association that the government has made some progress and very soon, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission will be calling a meeting to kick-start the operationalization of their new conditions of service.
