Otto Addo defies calls for resignation despite disastrous performance

Ghana’s coach, Otto Addo, has confirmed that he will not resign despite failing to lead the Black Stars to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The team was eliminated after a 1-1 draw against Angola and hoped to redeem themselves with a victory against Niger.

However, Niger shocked the four-time AFCON champions with a 2-1 win, scoring a decisive goal in stoppage time at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday.

This defeat has intensified calls for Otto Addo’s resignation, but he remains resolute, saying, he’s not the type of person to resign easily. He believes he has more to accomplish with the team and is looking forward to that.

“I’m not the person who can resign. If I had done this, I’d never have become a player or even a coach,” Addo said during a press conference. “If you know where I have come from as a person to arrive at this job, you won’t even ask about resignation.”

“People shouting and telling me to resign can’t affect me,” he added.

Meanwhile, former Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah has led Sudan in qualifying for the continental showpiece at the expense of his country.

The Black Stars will hope to bounce back but on a high note as they shift focus to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
