The Office of the Special Prosecutor has filed a new motion, to confirm the seizure and freezing of assets belonging to the former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah.
The court has set October 18, 2023, to hear the latest motion filed by the Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng.
It will be recalled that the OSP had taken steps to freeze the bank accounts and funds of Mrs Dapaah, encompassing both local and foreign currencies, under the provisions of section 38 of the Office of the Special Prosecutor Act, 2017 (Act 959).
This precautionary measure was taken pending a comprehensive investigation into allegations of corruption and corruption-related offenses.
The OSP’s decision to freeze the accounts followed a directive issued to two banks, instructing them to suspend Mrs Dapaah’s access to her accounts and investments until the order is officially revoked.
Aside from the funds in her accounts, US$590,000 and GH¢2.730,000 were also recovered from her residence on July 24.
However, on August 31, the Accra High Court overturned this decision, instructing the funds seized from Cecilia Dapaah to be returned to her within seven days.
Additionally, the court directed the OSP to unfreeze Cecilia Dapaah’s accounts.
In response to these legal developments, the OSP exercised its authority to regain custody of the funds shortly after the High Court’s decision that the seized money be returned.
