Organized Labour gives Sunon Asogli a two-week ultimatum to reinstate dismissed staff
Organized Labour has issued a two-week ultimatum to Sunon Asogli Ghana Limited to reinstate three local union leaders whose appointments were allegedly terminated.
The three staff members were dismissed because they decided to join the Ghana Mine Workers Union under the Trades Union Congress (TUC) umbrella.
The Secretary General of the TUC, Dr Yaw Baah, said all efforts by the TUC to secure their reinstatement have proved unsuccessful. Therefore, they have given the company June 26, 2023, to address their concerns and reinstate the union leaders.
Failure to meet their demand, organized labour has pledged to take further action.
“We want to warn them that we are giving them the chance that organized labour is speaking, and they better listen, and this message is going to the management of Sunon Asogli, and it is also going to the President of Ghana and his government, and they better listen to organized labour otherwise, they know what will happen.
“Those who should listen should listen and not only listen but hear us that we are giving them up to two weeks, that is June 26, to get our three guys back to work and stop all that intimidation going on and allow the union to finish the unionization,” Dr Baah said.
This comes after TUC gave a similar ultimatum to the company in April concerning the same issue.
They challenged the abuse of workers’ rights by the management of Sunon Asogli Power Ghana Limited and gave the administration an ultimatum of seven days, which ended on Monday, April 3, to reinstate the three employees.
Over 68 workers of the company decided to join the Ghana Mineworkers’ Union in February 2021.
The Union and the workers went through the necessary legal processes to acquire a Collective Bargaining Certificate that empowered the Union to represent and negotiate with the company on behalf of the workers.
The situation led to misunderstanding and ended at the National Labour Commission, and the Commission on two occasions directed and ruled that the certificate was properly and legally acquired, so the company should comply and enter negotiations with the Union.
