The funeral for O’Reilly Senior High School student Edward Borketey Sackey, allegedly murdered by a schoolmate, is set for October 18, 2024.

The father of the deceased, Enock Bortey Sackey, revealed that the family’s decision is based on the progress of the case at the La District Court.

The docket of the case has since been forwarded to the Attorney-General.

He indicated that due to procedural requirements, the docket will go through the regional office and headquarters before reaching its final destination.

Mr Sackey added that to expedite the process, the investigator has been tasked to personally follow up on the matter, given its significant public interest.

In a stern court address, the judge urged Mr Sackey not to slack off, advising him to maintain pressure on the police to ensure progress in the case.

Meanwhile, the accused, Godwin Mawuli, has been remanded for two weeks and has been advised to secure legal representation.

The case has been adjourned to October 21, 2024.

Background

On Monday, September 2, 2024, a final-year student at O’Reilly Senior High School, Godwin Mawuli, reportedly stabbed another student, Edward Borketey Sackey, to death following an argument.

The incident happened after they had completed their final year examinations.

The altercation reportedly began as a heated exchange over who was wealthier, escalating into a physical fight.

According to a cousin of the deceased, who is also a student at the school, the fight initially seemed trivial.

“He had a paper in the morning and came to me that he was done with his paper. A few minutes later we heard some noise at the back, and we asked what was wrong, and they said it was Godwin and Edward fighting. I asked what the fight was about, and they said it was nothing serious.

“The whole thing was about, ‘You, what do you have? I have this and that, you’re lying’. That was what brought the fight. So, I thought the whole thing was nothing.

“A few minutes later, the Godwin guy came up to me and asked me to warn my brother or else his blood will flow, and I told him it has not gotten to that,” she narrated.

She added that Edward sought help from some teachers in the school when the fight escalated, but they ignored him.

This, she said, prompted her to seek help from an uncle whose shop was outside the school.

However, upon her return, Godwin had stabbed her cousin.
