Only ‘settings’ – Former YEA boss reacts to fuel reduction

Former Deputy CEO of the Youth Employment Agency, Alhaji Ibrahim Bashiru, has described the government’s proposed reductions in fuel taxes as ‘settings’.

Alhaji Bashiru made this remark following the recent Cabinet meeting; however, he noted that essential details are still missing.

He highlighted three primary outcomes relayed by the Minister for Government Communications, which include initiatives to lower petroleum-related expenses, the introduction of 100 metro buses, and the enforcement of a ban on fuel allowances for government officials.

“I will commend the government for taking that decision,” he stated. “But as it stands now, we don’t even know which taxes they are going to take out,” he said in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report.

He expressed that the lack of specifics complicates the ability to evaluate the genuine impact of the policy.

“It’s difficult for us to have sound arguments. We cannot say whether it will be 5%, 2%, or even 20%,” he remarked.

He noted that the Finance and Energy Ministers are anticipated to furnish details prior to the next fuel pricing window; however, until that time, the policy remains ambiguous in practical terms.
