One shot dead, three injured after landguards attack construction workers
One person is reported dead, and three others injured after landguards allegedly attacked workers at a construction site at Tebu in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.
The incident happened on Friday, June 14, 2024.
The deceased has been identified as Gabriel, aka Alekye.
According to reports, the landguards had demanded a digging fee from the construction workers but the workers refused to give them any money, resulting in a heated exchange.
During the confrontation, a second group of landguards arrived at the scene and began shooting sporadically, leading to the injuring of four construction workers.
The victims were rushed to a private hospital in Danchira, but Gabriel’s condition became critical and was transferred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, where he was later pronounced dead.
According to one of the workers, Joseph Aidoo, the landguards attacked them for failing to pay the digging fee.
Meanwhile, Assemblyman for Danchira Electoral Area, Ebenezer Ahotor said the land guard activities are getting out of hand.
He said these land guards have been killing and terrorizing innocent people, including military officers who have bought land in Danchira.
On May 23, 2024, Morton City Real Estate reported to the Central East Regional Police in Kasoa that landguards were attacking their clients on their 49.640-acre land at Asabaham, which they sold to buyers for development.
These landguards have been seizing the tools of workers who are supposed to develop the sold lands.
The landguards carried cutlasses and guns and threatened the workers to either pay money or leave the sites.
Again, on June 6, 2024, an intelligence-led operation by the Central East Regional Police resulted in the arrest of the accused persons at Asabaham.
Information gathered indicates that cutlasses and axes were found on the suspects after the arrest.
The police also impounded their Toyota 4Runner with registration number GW 4420-X.
Investigations revealed that the suspects frequently visited the lands in the neighbourhood, including those of Morton City, to take possession of tools belonging to workers employed by developers to build houses.
This intimidation and threat to inflict harm forced the workers to leave the site out of fear.
