One dead, others injured after gunshots at a funeral

One person has been killed and three others injured after gunshots were fired on a funeral ground at Gyankobaa. The town is in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti region.

According to reports, the incident took place on Saturday, February 18, while the family of a deceased taxi driver,  Owusu Banaahene was preparing for his burial.

An eyewitness, Kwabena Wireku said that before the deceased was to be taken to the cemetery, his colleague taxi drivers requested that the family hand over the corpse so that they could display it for a few minutes.

The drivers allegedly drove the coffin in one of their vehicles in a procession.

They decided to return the corpse to the family after the procession.

However, one of the young men in charge of the coffin left and told the others that he needed to get something from his house.

To their dismay, he returned with a loaded gun and fired sporadically in the air.

He then allegedly hit one of the victims in the ear killing him on the spot.

Three other people standing nearby sustained various degrees of injury.

Two of the victims are currently receiving treatment at the Nkawie-Toase Government Hospital while the third has been referred to the Komfo-Anokye Teaching Hospital due to the severity of his condition.

Meanwhile, the suspect has handed himself to the police and is in custody after absconding.

The father of the suspect, who is the owner of the gun has also been arrested.
