Olympic bronze medalist Samuel Takyi speaks on going professional
Olympic medal-winning Ghanaian boxer Samuel Takyi says he is not in a rush to turn professional anytime soon despite seeing his stock rise following a decent showing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
This response follows speculations about him going professional in the shortest possible time after his inspiring performance at the games.
According to the young Olympic medalist, even though he desires to go pro in the near future, his focus now is to prepare for series of upcoming tournaments in which Ghana will be participating like next year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom.
“I will turn professional, but not now,” he said interview on Citi TV on Monday.
“For now, I’m preparing for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham next year. After that, there’s the 2023 African Games, which Ghana is hosting and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games would follow soon after that.
“So I will definitely go professional, but not now,” he concluded.
Takyi ended Ghana’s 29-year long wait for an Olympic medal when he clinched bronze in the men’s featherweight division.
The 20-year-old boxer was rewarded by the President with an award package of $30,000 and a car for his exploits in Japan.
