Ogunmodede confident of better outcome ahead of CHAN return leg
The home-based Super Eagles of Nigeria put up a resilient performance to hold the Black Galaxies of Ghana to a goalless draw in the first leg of their 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The Nigerian side, led by coach Daniel Ogunmodede, displayed tactical discipline and bravery throughout the match.
Despite Ghana dominating possession in the first half, Nigeria’s solid defensive setup proved impenetrable.
The Super Eagles gradually found their rhythm after the break, creating a few opportunities.
One of the game’s standout moments came when Sikiru Alimi’s thunderous strike rattled the woodwork, leaving the hosts relieved to escape unscathed.
Speaking after the match, Ogunmodede expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance and optimism for the return leg.
“We knew Ghana were going to be tough, like I said earlier (during the press conference), but we knew we were good enough to get a positive result,” the coach remarked.
“We showed bravery, and that is what Nigeria is known for. In the second leg, Nigeria will go for the win.”
The decisive return leg will take place on Saturday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
The aggregate winner will secure a place at CHAN 2024, set to be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.
