Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has taken legal action against Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, the host of Onua TV’s Morning Show, for alleged defamation.
In his suit, Ofori-Atta stated that Captain Smart made false statements during one of his shows, alleging that the Finance Minister had received a 10% share of the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) $3 billion bailout intended for Ghana.
During the show, Captain Smart reportedly stated, “Are you aware that Ken Ofori-Atta has taken his 10% of the IMF money? [For] Every loan we take he takes 10%.”
But the Finance Minister, through his legal team, has dismissed such unfounded claims.
According to them, these allegations are merely to paint Ofori-Atta as corrupt.
Mr Ofori-Atta is therefore seeking a recovery of GH¢10,000,000.00 as general damages, including aggravated and/or exemplary damages for defamation resulting from the libelous statement made by Captain Smart.
Additionally, he is requesting a perpetual injunction that would prevent Captain Smart, his servants, agents, or assigns from making similar or other defamatory statements about him.
The sector minister is also demanding an apology from Captain Smart and a retraction of the said defamatory statement.
