Obinim is all smiles as prosecutors ask judge for more time
The police have asked for more time to investigate the Founder of the International God’s Way Church, Bishop Daniel Obinim, who has been charged with forgery.
They claimed a lot more was needed to make their case watertight against the controversial pastor.
The Kaneshie District Court presided over by Rosemond Dodua Agyiri agreed and adjourned Obinim’s trial to July 20.
The controversial church founder, Obinim had come under the radar of another controversial figure, Ken Agyapong who is waging a crusade against ‘fake pastors’ in Ghana.
Counsel for the accused person, Charles Dela Blagogee, who spoke to theghanareport.com, after court proceedings welcomed the adjournment.
He expressed hope that the prosecution would conclude its investigation before the scheduled date.
Outside the courtroom, Obinim was full of smiles, in spite of mounting troubles he faces from the police, the court, the Ghana Revenue Authority for tax evasion and from his nemesis and MP for Assin Central, who has promised to increase the pastor’s pain.
Surrounded by his lawyers in flowing legal robes, pointed shoes and wigs, Bishop wore a yellow African print, walked out of the courtroom with his bodyguards on the alert.
They opened the door of the Black Land-cruiser for him to climb in and wave his huddle of lawyers goodbye.
The self-styled ‘Angel’ had spent three days in custody before he was granted a GH₵100,000 bail with three sureties.
He was immediately rushed to a private health facility after departing the police hospital, where he was receiving treatment while in custody.
But his lead counsel has confirmed that he is feeling much better since his release, although he is still being taken care of by his doctors.
This is not the first time Bishop Obinim is standing trial. In 2018, he, together with two of his pastors, stood trial at the Accra Circuit Court for allegedly assaulting his adopted children in the presence of his congregation.
In September, that same year, he was subsequently fined a total of GH¢12,000 for the assault.
Again in August 2016, Obinim was arrested by the Tema Regional Police for allegedly defrauding a man of GH¢11.6 million
