NSS personnel declare indefinite strike over unpaid allowances

The Concerned National Service Scheme (NSS) Personnel Association of Ghana (CONSPAG) has declared a nationwide strike, effective Wednesday, July 3, 2024.

According to the group, this is due to the government’s failure to pay their monthly allowances.

A statement dated July 3 said the government owed trainees five months’ allowance and university graduates three months’ allowance.

They said this has caused them to be unable to transport themselves to their places of work, to be unable to feed themselves, and to be unable to afford accommodation.

“According to NSS rules and regulations, personnel who fail to report at post for three months after posting will be sanctioned, and we have been working on empty stomachs and other unfriendly conditions of work for five months and three months now without allowances,” the group said.

The NSS personnel said despite their crucial roles in the success of the user agencies they were posted to, they have been abused, maltreated, and undermined.

A situation they describe as slavery.

“We are a unique workforce in the state and must be treated equally and fairly. We therefore call on all public and private stakeholders, including media houses, political leaders, and traditional rulers, to come to our aid and also help us push for the timely payment of allowances,” the statement concluded.

This follows a declaration of strike by the Civil and Local Government Service Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) beginning Wednesday, July 3, 2024, over what they say is the non-implementation of the new salary structure by the government.

A notice dated July 2, 2024, signed by Isaac Bampoe Addo, Executive Secretary of CLOGSAG, asked all staff to stay away from work until further notice.
