The Electoral Commission (EC) has clarified that no winner was officially declared in the New Patriotic Party parliamentary primaries held in the Yendi constituency of the Northern Region.
The absence of a clear winner is attributed to disruptions during the counting process.
Despite the absence of an official declaration, both aspirants, Farouk Mahama and Abibata Shani Mahama Zakaria, have individually proclaimed victory following the contest.
However, the Director of Electoral Services for the EC, Dr. Serebuor Quaicoo, emphasized that an official winner has not been determined as of yet.
Vote counting in Saturday’s NPP parliamentary primaries at the Yendi Constituency was disrupted after a polling agent allegedly bolted with some ballot papers.
The confusion is reported to have started after a supporter of an opponent, Abibata Shani Mahama Zakaria, accused the Electoral Commission (EC) officer of using indelible ink to invalidate the ballots of his favourite candidate.
During this confrontation, other NPP supporters gathered at the scene joined and caused chaos, bringing the electoral process to a halt.
Following this, the police arrested one suspect and are on a manhunt for others in the Yendi Constituency for electoral-related offences.
The police assured the public that all persons behind this unfortunate act would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
