NPP race: Lariba Zuwera secures injunction against ‘winner’ of Walewale polls

Source The Ghana Report

The Member of Parliament for Walewale, Lariba Zuwera Abudu, has secured an interim injunction against Dr. Abdul-Karibu Tia Mahama.

The injunction is to restrain Dr Tia Mahama, the winner of the NPP parliamentary primaries, from holding himself as a parliamentary candidate for the Walewale constituency.

Similarly, the Electoral Commission has also been injuncted from presenting Dr Tia Mahama to the NPP as the election winner.

The injunction will hold for 10 days.

It will be recalled that the incumbent MP lost to her main contender by 10 votes.

The MP, who serves as the Gender, Children, and Social Protection Minister, polled 334 votes, while her contender, a presidential staffer, secured 343 votes.

Tahir Sham-An garnered 145 votes, and Jangdow Mahama also had one vote.

On January 29, 2024, Lariba Zuwera Abudu filed a motion ex-parte in a Tamale High Court, contesting the results that showed Dr Mahama winning by a narrow margin of 10 votes.

She is, therefore, restraining Dr Tia Mahama from holding himself as the NPP’s parliamentary candidate-elect for the Walewale constituency.

“It is hereby ordered that the defendants are restrained herein, whether by themselves, their agents, assigns, workmen and allies, from holding out the 1st defendants as the New Patriotic Party’s candidate elect for the Walewale constituency for the 2024 parliamentary elections and or from submitting the name of the 1st defendants to the NPP, National office as the candidate elect in the January 27 2024 New Patriotic Party parliamentary primaries for the Walewale constituency”.
