Vote counting in Saturday’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries at the Yendi Constituency in the Northern Region has been disrupted after a polling agent bolted away with some ballot papers.
According to reports, the confusion started after a supporter of an opponent, Abibata Shani Mahama Zakaria, accused the Electoral Commission (EC) officer of using indelible ink to invalidate the ballots of his favourite candidate.
During this confrontation, other NPP supporters who had gathered at the scene joined and caused chaos, bringing the electoral process to a halt.
All the ballots have been destroyed, while other properties at the scene were vandalised.
The EC official was also beaten to a pulp, and media personnel attacked.
Meanwhile, the police have apprehended some perpetrators.
Farouk Aliu Mahama, who secured his parliamentary seat in 2020, faced a formidable challenge from Hajia Abibata Shani Mahama Zakaria, the Chief Executive Officer of Microfinance and Loans Centre (MASLOC).
