The Ghana Police Service has given assurances to delegates involved in the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer primaries in the Central Region, guaranteeing their full protection as voting commences across the constituencies.
DCOP Abraham Acquaye, the Central Regional Police Commander, confirmed that sufficient security measures have been established to facilitate a peaceful, free, and fair electoral process, encouraging delegates to participate in large numbers without fear of intimidation.
In an interview on Saturday, January 31, DCOP Acquaye cautioned that the police would take immediate action to arrest and prosecute anyone attempting to disrupt the voting process or incite disorder at the polling stations.
“The area is secure. I can confidently state that all seven constituencies are protected. We have deployed an adequate number of police officers to ensure that no incidents occur. We anticipate that everything will proceed as planned. We are here to safeguard individuals from threats and acts of intimidation. The police, as mandated, serve as peacekeepers,” he stated.
This police assurance comes as a total of 18,187 delegates are anticipated to cast their votes in the Central Region to select a flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party.
In the Assin Central Constituency, which is the home constituency of one of the flagbearer candidates, Kennedy Ohene Agyepong, 548 delegates are expected to vote at the Centenary Hall in Assin Foso, the capital of the constituency.
Security personnel have been stationed at all voting centres in the region as authorities strive to uphold calm and order throughout the electoral process.
