NPP Primary: Man who threatened to prevent delegates from voting on Nov 4 arrested

The police have taken into custody Ibrahim Iddrissu Shummah, the man seen in a viral video threatening to disrupt the upcoming NPP presidential primary in the Assin Central Constituency.

The suspect was picked up by the police on Thursday, October 26.

A statement issued by the police confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect is assisting with the ongoing investigation.

In the viral video, the suspect, identified as a supporter of Kennedy Agyapong, a flagbearer hopeful for the NPP in the Assin North Constituency, threatened to physically confront and prevent delegates from voting for Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming NPP primary scheduled for November 4, 2023.

The threats followed a declaration by hundreds of NPP delegates in the Assin Central Constituency pledging their support for Dr. Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has engaged representatives from the Electoral Commission, presidential aspirants, and election committee members of the NPP ahead of the party’s internal primary.

At the stakeholders meeting, the party assured that they would cooperate with official security to ensure a peaceful election during the presidential primary.

The chairman of the NPP election committee, Aaron Mike Oquaye, said that the team has taken all necessary steps and is fully prepared for the primary.

He urged the police to deal with individuals who would engage in misconduct during the election.
