NPP may sue Alan Kyerematen over use of ‘United Party’ name – Walewale MP
The Member of Parliament for Walewale, Tia Kabiru, has revealed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is considering legal action to stop Alan Kyerematen from using “United Party” as the name for his newly formed political movement.
Mr Kabiru argues that the name is problematic because the NPP traces its political heritage directly to the historic United Party (UP).
According to him, Mr Kyerematen and his team are trying to align themselves with a legacy they are no longer part of, which he says could mislead the public and distort the country’s political history.
“The Movement for Change’s choice of name is problematic because the NPP’s tradition comes from the United Party, they are trying to hide under the flag of the UP tradition,” he said in an interview.
He added that the NPP may challenge the name in court.

“Fair-minded Ghanaians will want to test it in court.”
When asked directly whether the party would sue, he replied, “Of course. It’s a good case to test whether the name can even stand”.
The MP also criticised Kyerematen and his team for what he called a lack of thoughtfulness in choosing the name, saying he expected more care and consideration.
Alan Kyerematen resigned from the NPP in 2023, citing unfair treatment and internal divisions.
He went on to launch the Movement for Change, now known as the United Party, using a butterfly as its symbol and promoting what he calls a “transformational leadership agenda”.
