NPP Manifesto falls short in addressing housing problems—National Tenants’ Union

The National Tenants’ Union of Ghana has expressed disappointment in the housing policy proposals outlined in the 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Manifesto.

The union cites glaring inconsistencies, broken promises, and recycled proposals that have characterized the NPP’s approach to housing policy since 2016.

At the NPP manifesto launch in Takoradi on August 18, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia announced plans for a National Housing Programme to provide Ghanaians with access to affordable housing.

However, the Secretary-General of the National Tenants’ Union of Ghana, Fredrick Opoku, remains sceptical, stating that every election year, politicians make too many promises they cannot keep.

“We are very much worried about the promises. Every now and then, every year promises, every election year, we hear this politician coming to give promises,” he said.

Opoku added that he has put in efforts to ensure tenants get to access decent and affordable housing but to no avail.

“I remember as Secretary-General of the National Tenants Union of Ghana, I have been part and parcel of so many teams and negotiations but to no avail, so I was surprised that the NPP came out with recycled promises while those that they made in 2016 and 2020 are unfulfilled,” he said.

He explained that the NPP’s manifesto proposals have failed to instil confidence in the union, leaving tenants and prospective homeowners uncertain about the party’s commitment to affordable housing.
