NPP flagbearer race: Dr. Bawumia officially files nomination
Former Vice President and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate for the 2024 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has officially submitted his nomination to contest in the party’s upcoming flagbearer election set for January 31, 2025.
Dr. Bawumia, together with his wife, Samira Bawumia, and other party members, submitted the form today, August 28, 2025, at the party’s headquarters.
Speaking to party faithfuls after filling the nomination, Dr. Bawumia declared his readiness to lead the party, citing his integrity, competence, and humility.
“The NPP and Ghana are demanding a leader who embodies deep intellect, humility, respect for all persons, unity, courage, foresight, and resilience. As the NPP seeks a leader who represents the character of this party’s tradition and the values of our forebears, I, Mahamudu Bawumia, offer myself to lead the party into the 2028 elections,” he said.
The race is shaping up to be competitive, as Bawumia’s primary contender, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, submitted his nomination form on August 27.
Other candidates who have submitted their nominations include former party General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong and Abetifi MP, and former Agric Minister, Bryan Acheampong.
Additionally, former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has expressed his intention to join the race and is expected to file his nomination forms later today.
This flagbearer election is seen as a pivotal moment for the NPP, especially as the party seeks to maintain internal unity and strong leadership ahead of the next general election.
In a related development, party figure Francis Addai-Nimoh has opted out of the contest, citing concerns over “unhealthy monetisation,” internal bias, and a lack of appropriate timing for his candidacy.
