The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially endorsed Farouk Aliu Mahama, as its parliamentary candidate for the Yendi constituency.

The confirmation comes after a tumultuous primary election marred by violence and disputed results.

In a press statement released on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, the NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, announced the decision of the National Executive Committee (NEC).

The Yendi constituency primary, held on January 27, 2024, witnessed chaos during the counting process, leading to both candidates, the incumbent MP Farouk Aliu Mahama and MASLOC CEO Hajia Abibata Shanni Mahama Zakariah, claiming victory.

The Electoral Commission refrained from declaring a winner due to the disorder.

Following the incident, Hajia Abibata Shanni Mahama submitted a petition to the party’s leadership, calling for the annulment of the election due to the chaotic atmosphere that disrupted the counting process.

In her petition, Abibata Mahama alleged a conspiracy among some party officials to manipulate the elections in favour of a specific candidate.

She argued that such actions go against the democratic values of the New Patriotic Party and urged the party leadership to invalidate the election results.

The Electoral Commission (EC), later interdicted five officers, tasked to supervise the Yendi NPP primary.

The decision to interdict these officers, excluding municipal officers, comes after allegations of ballot tampering during the election.

Subsequently, the National Executive Committee (NEC) held a series of meetings to resolve the issue in the constituency as the party prepares to campaign in all constituencies to ‘break the 8’ in the 2024 general elections.
