The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has unanimously confirmed the 2nd Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, as its 2024 Parliamentary candidate for Fomena.

The unanimous decision was made at the National Executive Council meeting.

NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), announced the confirmation on Thursday, September 12, 2024.

He expressed gratitude to Asiamah, the current independent MP for Fomena, for his support of the party.

Asiamah, who has rejoined the NPP, stated that he has missed being part of the party and pledged to lead the party to a landslide victory in the Fomena constituency.

He urged party members to unite and focus on highlighting the ongoing projects in the constituency to garner more votes.

He asserted that the most important thing was for the various leaders of the constituency, particularly Assembly members, to campaign on the many projects currently ongoing in the constituency to garner more votes for the party.

According to Chairman Wontumi, the NPP is optimistic that with Asiamah as the candidate, the party will retain the Fomena seat in the upcoming elections.

On October 13, 2020, the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) removed the incumbent legislator for Fomena, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, from the party for going independent.

“The Member of Parliament for the Fomena Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Amoako Andrew Asiamah, who was elected to parliament on the ticket of the Party, has filed to contest as an Independent Parliamentary Candidate,” NPP General Secretary, John Boadu said in a statement.

“By so doing, he has presumably vacated his seat in Parliament pursuant to Article 97(1)(g) of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic”.

Mr. Boadu noted in the release dated September 13, that Article 97(1)(g) of the NPP Constitution states that: “A member of Parliament shall vacate his seat in Parliament if he leaves the party of which he was a member at the time of his election to Parliament to join another party or seeks to remain in Parliament as an independent member.”

But after winning the parliamentary seat in the 2020 elections, Andrew Asiamah Amoah in a letter addressed to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, declared his intention to join the ruling New Patriotic Party side.

His decision therefore increased the NPP’s seats in Ghana’s 8th Parliament to 138 against the NDC’s 137.

He further assured the speaker that he would cooperate with the members of the ruling New Patriotic Party to ensure that government business is conducted efficiently.
