The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has criticised the attack on a student of the Christian Service University in Kumasi.

He was allegedly assaulted by some supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) during a lecture by former president John Mahama.

During a visit to the student on Saturday, Richard Ahiagbah, the National Communications Director for the NPP, conveyed the party’s support and condemned the attack.

“It is absolutely unacceptable for anyone to be assaulted for merely expressing their opinion.

“Nana Boakye did nothing wrong by disagreeing with former President Mahama. The attempt by the Ashanti NDC to downplay this issue is equally troubling,” he said.

He also called for the immediate arrest of the perpetrators.

“It is deeply troubling that the police have not taken action to arrest those responsible for this vicious assault on Nana Boakye. We demand justice for him and a thorough investigation into this matter,” Mr Ahiagbah stressed.

The student, reportedly an organiser of the NPP Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON), is said to have engaged in disruptive behaviour during a lecture by former president John Mahama despite warnings from the event organisers.

Delivering a public lecture organised to mark the school’s 50th anniversary, Mr Mahama, took a swipe at his NPP opponent, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Mr Mahama’s remark, describing Dr Bawumia’s campaign as a ”concert party”, was met with mixed reactions.

While many applauded the jab, the TESCON member, Nana Boakye, was unhappy and jeered at it.

Boakye’s jeers led to a violent response from the NDC supporters.

Narrating the incident, Nana Boakye said, “I also responded and said, ‘Mahama wo boa’ na wo b3 wi’ [Meaning Mahama, you’re lying, you will lose]. Later on, I saw a macho man who approached me and gave me a warning that I should be careful. So, I also asked him, ‘What have I done’? And the moment I asked him the question, he came directly and slapped me in front of the former President”.
