The New Patriotic Party (NPP) legislators in Parliament have opposed the adjournment of Thursday’s sitting indefinitely by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.
They believe that the Speaker should have declared them the Majority in Parliament and ordered NDC legislators to vacate the right side of the aisle reserved for the majority group.
By failing to do this, they believe the Speaker of Parliament violated a Supreme Court order to uphold the NPP Caucus as the Majority in Parliament.
Addressing the press, the Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, indicated that the action by NDC MPs to occupy the majority side, forced them [NPP] to be absent in the Chamber today, despite initiating the processes to recall Parliament.
Mr Afenyo-Markin blamed the Speaker for not asking the NDC MPs to vacant the majority seats for their assigned position in Parliament.
Thus, the Majority Leader claimed that Mr Bagbin was supervising chaos in the country, and his actions and conduct did not speak well of democracy.
“What the Speaker did today amounts to supervising chaos in the country and bringing the image of democracy to dispute. The NDC Minority members were all over claiming that we the Majority did not attend the so-called business meeting.
“Who are they? Who called, and when did we constitute a new committee in Parliament?” He questioned and continued, “I chair the business committee in Parliament.
The Majority Leader announced that his caucus would officially write to the Speaker again to recall sitting again for government businesses to resume.
He contended that no matter the challenges in the Chamber, the government agenda must proceed for the benefit of Ghanaians.
