Non-operational Komenda Sugar Factory needs urgent overhaul – Ofosu-Adjare

The Minister-Designate for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has underscored the urgent need to revitalize the Komenda Sugar Factory to benefit the Ghanaian populace.

The factory has remained dormant due to a shortage of raw materials, a persistent challenge that has significantly impeded its operations.

During her appearance before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 22, Ofosu-Adjare stressed the importance of revamping the factory as a crucial step towards reducing the nation’s reliance on sugar imports.

She committed to working closely with the relevant ministries to assess the factory’s current condition and ensure its transformation into a fully operational and valuable asset for the country.

“I have been told that as we speak, the Komenda Sugar Factory is not operational and one of the major challenges the factory has suffered is the lack of raw materials to feed that industry and some missing parts.

“I have also been told that monies were released to solve these problems. And the total health of the factory should be done after an evaluation. So I will work to ensure we know the actual health of the factory.

“But it’s obvious we need that factory to work for the benefit of Ghanaians because we are importing about half a million dollars worth of sugar into the country. And so once I take office, I will work together with the ministry to ensure we assess the health of the factor and ensure Ghana benefits from that monumental project.”
