No show in court by Mercedes driver in antics on Accra-Legon road

The police have said Kofi Buckman, a 28-year-old man who was arrested for driving recklessly at a traffic light intersection in Accra failed to appear before the court as expected Monday, October 25, due to his ill-health

According to Superintendent John Atanga of the Airport District Police Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD), Buckman is currently on admission at the hospital and receiving treatment after being taken ill late on Sunday night.

“It is unfortunate the court matter could not come on. He was released on bail to his family to be brought today. But this morning we had a document from his doctors that late last night he was taken ill and is currently under observation,” he explained.

“Under this circumstance, we are handicapped to talk since it has to do with health matters,” Supt Atanga explained in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Joy FM.

“As we speak, I’m just waiting for his lawyers to come. So we have to get clearance from the medical facility that he is okay then we can move on to the court, because when it comes to health issues, the dynamics changed,” he added.

He sounded a caution to individuals who equally engage in such reckless driving on the roads across the country, noting that the police would deal with them in accordance with the laws of the State.

“The IGP and his team are out there, and we are not going to countenance any sort of indiscipline. It is not in the interest of anybody, all road users, including their own lives, so they should be warned. So long as we get them or get information about them, they cannot hide anywhere,” he said.

The suspect was captured in a viral video, displaying his driving antics in a dangerous manner, posing danger to other road users and himself in a grey Mercedes-Benz at the Airport Junction, popularly known as Opeibea in Accra, off the Accra- Legon road.

He turned himself to the police on Sunday morning with some relatives as the Airport Police Station began investigations into the matter, and was subsequently granted bail to be brought to court today on October 25.

The amateur footage showed that he drove into the middle of the four-lane road and, in a fast and forceful way, turned his car in circles and eventually sped off before the traffic light turned green.cc
